Fauxgerty Five: Chelsie of Fable & Lore

We met up with metalist and designer, Chelsie Hellige of Fable & Lore to talk slow fashion, learn about her creative approach and the best advice she ever received (spoiler: it’s from her husband. So sweet.). To our STL locals, Fable & Lore is popping up in our Saint Louis Showroom this Saturday, June 24th, so we wanted to share a little more about one of our favorite local makers.

As a self-identified true Gemini, Chelsie sought to do work that both fulfilled her and kept her interest. She honed in on her creating her signature pieces while fine-tuning her craft and learning new techniques. She sources her materials with sustainability in mind *a girl after our own hearts*. Today, she offers necklaces, rings, hair pieces and more, all made my hand in her Saint Louis studio.

Digging her? Read some of her Fauxgerty Five thoughts below.

What advice do you live by?

My husband works in development operations and he always repeats to me the Silicon Valley mantra, "Fail fast". I know there's been a lot of back and forth about this phrase over the years, but for me it's useful because I can be risk-averse to the point of not trying things. "Fail fast" reminds me that I don't always have to make things 100% perfect before I push it out the door; that it's okay to sort of beta-test it, so-to-speak, to gauge responses and make improvements incrementally. It makes trying something new way less stressful and more realistic for me.

 What do you worry about?

I tend to think a lot about the future, the overall arc of my life, and how I fit into the universe. I think existentialism is a natural effect of self-employment!

What are you currently working on and what’s driving it?

I'm currently going hard at a new collection of big ol' rings, and love how they're turning out! My work for the past year or so, but especially lately, has been inspired and informed by Ancient Meso-American themes. A couple months ago I travelled to Tulum, Mexico and I just can't get enough of anything with a Mayan or jungle feel. It's fair to say I'm obsessed.

Be sure to see her products in person at our pop-in shop this Saturday! Find event details here. PS there are vegan mini tacos and Rose spritzers involved <3
